Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know what I want to talk about before starting therapy?

Nope. Most people don’t come into therapy with a perfectly mapped-out plan of everything they want to work on. Sometimes you just know something feels off, you’re tired of feeling stuck, or you’re ready to understand yourself differently.

That’s enough. We’ll start where you are and figure out the next step together.

What happens during the first session?

Our first session is about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you’ve been experiencing, what you hope will change, and what support could look like moving forward.

Your entire life story does not need to be perfectly organized, and your trauma history does not need to arrive with a PowerPoint presentation. (Seriously. We have time.) We’ll move at a pace that feels comfortable and meaningful for you.

Do you accept insurance?

Nurturing You Counseling is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. Many clients choose private pay because it allows for greater privacy, flexibility, and a more personalized therapy experience.

I also offer a limited number of sliding-scale spots. If you have questions about payment or current sliding-scale availability, feel free to reach out.

Do you offer in-person therapy?

Nurturing You Counseling is exclusively a telehealth practice providing therapy to clients in Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, and Washington.

Virtual therapy allows you to receive support from the comfort of your own space, whether that’s your home, your office, or even your car. It also makes therapy easier to fit into real life amidst busy schedules, parenting, shift work, and everything else life tends to throw your way.

What type of therapy do you use?

I pull from evidence-based approaches including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), but therapy is always individualized to you.

Do you work with men, women, and first responders/veterans?

Yes. I work with clients navigating anxiety, burnout, family wounds, relationships, self-worth, life transitions, and the many complicated layers that make us human. I also have a special connection to first responder and military communities, and I understand that this work and lifestyle can impact more than just the person wearing the badge or uniform.

What if I’m nervous about starting therapy?

That’s so common. I’m the therapist, and I get a little nervous, too!

Starting therapy means doing something unfamiliar, and your brain may have some thoughts about that. (Brains love to keep us safe, even when they’re being a little overprotective.)

You don’t have to feel completely ready or know exactly what you want to work on. You just have to be willing to start somewhere, and we’ll figure out the next step together.
